It's Dangerous To Be Isolated from Relationships and Society

  • KIHASA will hold an international seminar with overseas Korean scholars on Wednesday, July 3, starting at 1:30 pm.

  • The seminar will feature three presentations and a comprehensive discussion, focusing on social isolation and mental health policy trends.

KIHASA will hold an international seminar on "Psychological and Emotional Mental Health Services: Policy Challenges" on Wednesday, July 3, from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm at KIHASA's Sejong Conference Hall.

This seminar is organized to share policy trends on mental health and discuss the development direction of health and welfare policies through academic exchange with overseas Korean scholars from the Korean American Social Work Educators Association (KASWEA). The event will be streamed online via Zoom.

Part I of the seminar consists of the Opening Ceremony and Topical Presentations. The event will begin with a congratulatory speech by KASWEA President Kim Suk-hee and an opening speech by KIHASA Acting President Kang Hye-Kyu.

This will be followed by three topical presentations:

First, Dr. Hahm Hyeouk, Professor and Associate Dean for Research, School of Social Work, Boston University, will present on “Addressing and Improving Asian American Young Adults’ Health.” Second, Dr. Moon Heehyul, Associate Professor, Kent School of Social Work and Family Science, University of Louisville, will discuss “Challenges and Support for Dementia Caregivers’ Mental Health: Background, Pandemic Impact, and Policy Initiatives.” Third, Dr. Yoon Sungmin, Assistant Professor, Sungkyunkwan University, will present on “Clinical Practice in the Age of Isolation: Mental Health Issues and Evidence-Based Practice.”


Part 2 will be a comprehensive discussion chaired by Jun Jina, Head of the Center for Psychosocial Health Research at KIHASA. There will be two designated discussants for each topical presentation.

The following are the designated discussants:

For the first presentation, Dr. Moon Ingyu, Assistant Professor, Anna Maria College, and Dr. Lee Sang-Jung, Head, Center for Child and Family Policy Research, KIHASA; for the second presentation, Dr. Lee Othelia, Professor, School of Social Work, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Dr. Lee Yunkyung, Senior Research Fellow, Center for Policy Planning on Low Fertility and Population Aging, KIHASA; and for the third presentation, Dr. Kim Jeehoon, Associate Professor, Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology, Idaho State University, and Dr. Cheong Sejeong, Associate Research Fellow, Welfare State Research Group, KIHASA.


KIHASA Acting President Dr. Kang Hye-Kyu said, “The issue of mental health is gaining importance as we seek to address the spread of social isolation and the risk of broken relationships.” She added, “We have invited esteemed KASWEA member professors who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of social welfare and mental health to this seminar. I hope this will be a valuable time to exchange ideas among national and international researchers and explore future directions for policy research.”
